Tendring District Council issues unlicensed tattooists alert
People in Essex have been warned about a "sharp rise" in the number of unlicensed tattooists.
Tendring District Council said it was targeting rogue tattooists in the north of the county who were operating either from home or by visiting clients.
Fines of up to £1,000 will be issued to such businesses who, the council said, posed a serious health risk.
Councillor Nick Turner said he was "extremely concerned" by increase in reports of such operators.
He urged people who were aware of such practices to get in touch with the authority as there was no guarantee they complied with rules regarding cleanliness or sterilisation.
The authority said it feared the increase could lead to more cases of serious infection such as HIV, septicaemia and hepatitis for customers.
