Bail for man held over woman's body found in Essex ditch

A 74-year-old man has been released on bail after being arrested in connection with the discovery of a woman's body in a ditch in west Essex.

The man, from the Lee Valley area, was questioned on suspicion of murder and has been released until Thursday 5 April pending further inquiries.

Police said the woman's death was being treated as a domestic-related incident.

The woman, named as 62-year-old Jan Downey, was found near her home in Daws Hill in Sewardstone on Saturday.

She died from drowning, a post-mortem examination has revealed.

Police said they were keen to hear from anyone who used Daws Hill between 18:30 GMT on Friday 9 March and 08:00 GMT on Saturday 10 March.

A family statement released through the police said: "Jan was a loving daughter, sister, mother and grandmother who will be sadly missed by many people."
