No verdict in Thomas Smith Essex baby manslaughter case

A jury has failed to reach a verdict in the case of a man accused of killing a two-month-old baby girl in Essex.

Thomas Smith, 26, of Hilton Avenue, Aberdeen, was accused of the manslaughter of Chantelle Pilkington of Friars Street, Shoebury, in August 2009.

The jury at Chelmsford Crown Court failed to reach a verdict and the case was formally discharged by the judge.

The court ordered a formal not guilty verdict be recorded.

The prosecution had said it would not be offering any further evidence.
