CCTV images of a man who is a key witness in a Southend rape inquiry have been released by Essex Police.

A 21-year-old woman was attacked on a grassy verge of the cliffs between Clifftown Parade and Southend seafront between 03:00 and 05:00 BST on 11 May.

The victim left Talk nightclub, in Lucy Road, with the key witness and another man before she continued on her own.

Police said the man may be called Cain or Kane and was wearing a brown shirt and dark jeans.

Senior investigating officer Det Ch Insp Simon Werrett said: "Our previous appeals for the man believed to be Cain to come forward have so far failed.

"He really is a key witness which is why we are having to resort to issuing an image of him. We are looking to identify both men and we believe we can do so once we speak to him.

"I would urge the man in the CCTV image or anyone who recognises him to contact us."

The attacker is described as white, in his mid-20s, has short dark hair, is of average build and was wearing a black T-shirt at the time.

The victim is continuing to be offered support by officers as she recovers at home "following her traumatic ordeal", said police.

Anyone with information in connection with this rape investigation is asked to contact Essex Police.
