Essex Police officers injured in crash

Two police officers were injured when their car hit a traffic island and caught fire in Essex on Friday night.

The officers, who both needed hospital treatment, were responding to an incident when the accident happened in Broomfield, near Chelmsford.

It was the second incident involving the Essex force's vehicles on Friday.

In the afternoon a woman was seriously injured in a collision with a police Land Rover which happened on the A12 at Mark's Tey, near Colchester.

The woman, who is in her 60s and from south-east London, remains in hospital with "potentially life-threatening injuries".

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened at 15:40 BST.
