A man has been arrested over the theft of armour and weapons from two museums in Essex.

Two replica English Civil War helmets, a chain mail hood and a Napoleonic axe were stolen from the Maldon Combined Military Services Museum on Thursday.

On Saturday, items including Norman two-handed swords and a mace were taken from Stansted Mountfitchet Castle.

A 32-year-old man from Takeley, near Stansted, is being questioned on suspicion of theft, police said.

The burglary at the castle also saw a chain mail shirt, steel riveted coif, a double-handed Norman axe, a jousting helmet, two Saxon metal helmets, a Norman longbow and 10 arrows taken.
