A police community support officer broke his leg trying to stop a suspected shoplifter at a supermarket.

PSCO Paul Dallimore, 52, was trying to detain the man at Sainsbury's Local in Southend when they both fell over.

The suspect "made a run for it" following the incident, at about 21:45 GMT on Saturday, in the store on Southchurch Road.

Mr Dallimore is to have an operation after suffering a "nasty break to his lower leg", Essex Police said.

Insp Matt Bennett said: "I have to praise Paul for his efforts in trying to detain the man so he could be questioned.
