A mother and her two children were seriously injured when they were hit by a car outside a restaurant in Essex.

An Audi TT hit the family outside McDonald's in Hadleigh High Street at about 17:50 GMT on Saturday.

The 39-year-old woman from Benfleet was carrying her two-year-old son and walking with her daughter, eight, at the time, police said.

They suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and were taken to Southend Hospital.

The 23-year-old driver of the car, who comes from the Basildon area, and his passenger were not injured.

Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
