Maldon rapist attacks woman in bushes

A woman was dragged into bushes and raped after being targeted by two men in an underpass.

The attack took place near a Tesco store in Maldon, Essex, on Saturday evening, police said.

The victim, aged in her 20s, was walking away from the Fullbridge supermarket, under Mill Lane, when she was approached.

Police said a man suspected of the rape was of Asian or Indian appearance.

He is described as aged about 30, 5ft 9ins to 5ft 10ins tall with stubble on his face, He was wearing a Superdry jacket with a green logo.

'Increased patrols'

The second man with him was slightly taller and wore a black coat and a hooded top with the hood up.

The incident took place between 17:45 GMT and 18:15 GMT.

A cordon has been established at the scene and investigations by detectives are ongoing.

DCI Simon Werrett, of Essex Police, said the rapist may have been seen acting suspiciously in the area earlier in the day.

"I would also like to speak to anyone who was in the area between 5.30pm and 7pm who may have seen anything," he said.

"I have a team of detectives obtaining information about the suspects to enable us to arrest them as soon as possible."

DCI Werrett said Maldon was "a safe town" and said such an incident would be "shocking" to the community.

Patrols in the area are being increased to reassure residents and gather information about those responsible.
