Southend flat fire death: Two men charged

Two men have been charged in connection with the murder of a 67-year-old who was found dead after a fire in his flat.

Albert Williams died of internal injuries at his home in Cedar Close, Southend last August.

Anthony Smith, 43, from Westcliff, was charged with murder and two counts of burglary at the victim's home.

Ismail Celik, 34, from Grays was charged with two counts of aiding and abetting burglary.

Police said the burglary happened on 1 August, a week before Mr Williams' death. His body was discovered by fire crews on 8 August.

A post-mortem examination established that he had been assaulted before he died.

Both men will appear at Southend Magistrates' Court later.
