Warning over playing on ice in Gloucestershire

People in Gloucestershire are being warned of the dangers of standing on frozen lakes and ponds.

Officers received reports of children playing on the frozen Pittville Lake in Cheltenham, and young people on a duck pond in Willersey.

Pcso Steve Yetton, who covers the Pittville Park area, said the ice was not strong enough to walk on, despite the low temperatures.

If someone had fallen through the ice, it could have been fatal, he said.

Temperatures in parts of Gloucestershire fell to -11C overnight.

Mr Yetton added: "The danger to anyone not heeding this warning is enormous; therefore we are urging parents to take a few minutes to talk to their children about the dangers of frozen lakes."

He also advised dog owners to keep their pets on a lead when they are near frozen water.
