Stroud and Dursley drivers quizzed over scrap metal

Vehicles suspected of carrying scrap metal have been stopped at a number of police roadblocks in Gloucestershire.

Officers searched vans and lorries near Sharpness Docks, on the A38 at Moreton Valance, and the A46 at Woodchester.

A police spokesman said the operation followed a rise in theft of metal in the county which he said was up by more than 50% on this time last year.

Officers were also checking drivers were not transporting waste illegally or moving suspected stolen goods.

"A worldwide dramatic increase in the price of scrap metal has coincided with a vast increase in thefts of such items, in particular copper, aluminium, lead, brass, and bronze," the force spokesman said.

"Saturday's operation is just one of a number of tactics we are using to clamp down on this illegal trade," he added.
