Woman sexually assaulted in Gloucester

A 20-year-old woman was subjected to a serious sexual assault in grassland in Gloucester, prompting a police investigation.

Officers say the woman was walking near the clock tower building in Abbeymead when a man wearing a hooded top tried to grab her bag late on Wednesday.

The woman was then pushed to the ground before she was sexually assaulted.

Police said they were carrying out "extensive inquires" and the woman was being offered support.

'Get a taxi'

Det Insp Steve Bean said: "This area is a very safe place to live but I am sure this incident will shock the community.

"We do not want to cause any unnecessary alarm or distress but we are urging people to be aware of their personal safety. Don't walk home alone at night, try to get a taxi or stay with friends."

Officers want to hear from anybody who saw a man acting suspiciously in Huntley Close, past the The Turmut Hoer pub and Tesco Express in Abbeymead and into the Kimberland Way estate.

The man is described as 6ft tall, of slim build and wore dark clothing including a baggy hooded top which was over his head and pulled tight.
