Explosive-accused Cheltenham man appears in court

A man charged with making an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose has appeared before magistrates.

Martin Counsell, 52, from Brooklyn Road, Cheltenham, was arrested last Friday after police found items in a garage.

The charge was brought by the South East Counter Terrorism Unit under the Explosive Substances Act.

Mr Counsell was remanded in custody to appear at Gloucester Crown Court on 8 June.

Police said the charge related to a period between 1 September 2011 and 11 May 2012, involving an explosive substance called a TATP.

Up to 100 homes were evacuated after the discovery of the substance.
