Gloucestershire snow: Gritters to work overnight to clear roads

Teams of gritting crews will continue to treat main routes throughout Gloucestershire overnight in a bid to to keep them clear of snow and ice.

A local authority spokesman said the operation would widen to include side roads over the next 24 hours.

About 300 homes were left without power in Coleford on Friday afternoon because of snow on power lines.

Western Distribution said power has been restored to 150 homes and said the issue would be fully fixed by midnight.

The firm said snow had hampered efforts to fix the fault and extra resources were called out.

More than 300 Gloucestershire schools were shut on Friday as some 10cm (3ins) of snow fell across the county.

The Forest of Dean was the hardest hit with 16cm (6ins) falling throughout the day.

Early snowfall disrupted travel and services with several roads closed by police who have been warning of treacherous driving conditions.

Gloucestershire Police said a number of roads have been closed due to heavy snow and officers are urging drivers not to make unnecessary journeys.

A full list of closures and warnings of hazardous road conditions has been posted on the force website.

On the railways there were delays between Gloucester and Newport in south Wales.

All waste and recycling collections due on Friday in the Forest of Dean, the Cotswolds and Stroud were cancelled.
