A419 closure may be postponed due to rail works clash

Further overnight road closures on the A419 may be postponed by the Highways Agency to avoid a clash with rail works between Kemble and Swindon.

The busy road between Swindon and Cirencester, is getting more congested as people use it as an alternative to the disrupted trains.

Dave Sledge from Highways Agency, said: "We are speaking with First Group to reflect what's happened this week."

The northbound A419 has been closed between 20:00 and 06:00 on weekdays.

The works began earlier this week and more have been planned for 19 - 22 August and then separate nights on 27 August, 2, 3, and 4 September.

Dual tracks

"It is absolutely right that we look at now whether we can change what we are doing, but I must re-iterate it is the ideal time of year to carry out this work because of the weather," added Mr Sledge.

Three weeks of railway works are taking place between Kemble and Swindon to convert the line to dual tracks.

It is part of a £45m project ahead of the Great Western Main Line's electrification.

Signals and other equipment will be moved to make room for 12 miles (19km) of additional track.
