Six people rescued after two boats sink in the Solent

The crews of two boats had to be rescued after their vessels sank in the Solent on Saturday.

An RNLI lifeboat went to the aid of a Solent Sunbeam vintage sailing yacht after it capsized and sank off Cowes at about 1615 BST.

The three people onboard were picked up from the water and were not hurt.

And shortly before 1700 BST a couple and their eight-year-old daughter had to be rescued from their sinking speedboat off Lee-on-Solent.

They had called 999 and sent up an orange smoke flare which could be clearly seen from the Solent Coastguard operations room, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said.

The Gosport rescue boat was already out on the water and was able to get to the sinking boat within 10 minutes and the Solent Coastguard rescue helicopter was also scrambled.

The family onboard were taken ashore by the lifeboat and were treated for cold and shock.
