A man has been jailed for six years for a carjacking at a garage which left the owner with serious head injuries.

Craig Michael Collier, 23, jumped into the driver's seat of the vehicle in January and drove off, dragging the 73-year-old man along with him.

The owner had been checking his tyre pressure at the time, at the Shell garage in Winchester Road, Southampton.

Collier, who was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, was sentenced at Southampton Crown Court.

He was also convicted of driving while disqualified and taking a vehicle without consent, and was banned from driving for five years during sentencing on Tuesday.

Police, who referred to the incident as "a shocking crime", were called to the garage after the carjacking, at about 1900 GMT on 19 January.

The stolen vehicle was found abandoned in Charlie Joy Gardens a day later.
