A woman managed to fight off a sex attacker after being pushed to the ground in Hampshire.

The 21-year-old woman was walking home along Bevois Valley Road, Southampton, after a night out when she was approached by a man at about 0430 BST.

He forced her to the ground but she managed to escape as he tried to sexually assault her, police said.

Police are trying to trace a male passer-by who witnessed the attack outside the Heli-Beds store.

'Disturbed attacker'

The attacker is described as black, in his 20s, of average build, about 6ft with a shaved head and he was wearing a red hooded top.

The area around the scene of the assault remains cordoned off while detectives carry out further enquiries.

Det Insp Dave Jackson said: "I have no doubt that the passer-by walking nearby on the opposite side of the road probably disturbed the attacker and allowed the victim to struggle free.

"I would appeal directly to him to come forward and speak to police as he may have vital information which could help us with our enquiries."
