An 84-year-old pedestrian is in a critical condition in hospital after being struck by a car as she tried to cross a road on the Isle of Wight.

A Rover car, driven by a 51-year-old man, hit the elderly woman at the junction between Pyle Street and High Street in Newport at 1230 BST.

High Street has been shut at its junction with Pyle Street while officers conduct an investigation.

The junction between Carisbrooke Road and Mill Lane has also been closed.

It is not known how long the roads will remain closed, a police spokeswoman said.

The woman is being treated at St Mary's Hospital.
