A man was attacked and had his car windscreen smashed after he went to the aid of a woman who said she had been beaten up by her boyfriend.

The 53-year-old was approached by the woman as he got out of his Citroen Saxo outside the Co-op store in Twyford Avenue, Portsmouth, last Thursday.

The woman's boyfriend appeared and jumped on the car, before smashing the windscreen.

The driver had his shirt ripped, before he punched the boyfriend, who ran off.

'Jog memories'

Police are still trying to trace the woman and her boyfriend.

He is described as white, in his 20s, 5ft 10in, of big build with black hair. He was wearing a black tracksuit.

Pc Marie Maskell, of Hampshire Police, said: "After stepping in to help out a damsel in distress, [the man] had his car windscreen smashed, was threatened and assaulted.

"We're releasing a picture of the smashed windscreen in the hope it will jog people's memories."
