A man arrested after a bomb disposal team was called to a property on the Isle of Wight has been released.

Police received reports that a suspicious object, which looked like a hand grenade, had been found in a house in Arctic Road, Cowes, on Tuesday.

The 52-year-old man was held on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence but later released without charge.

Residents living near the scene had to be evacuated during the operation.

They were allowed home after police confirmed the object posed no threat.

Bomb disposal experts from the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Department attended the scene.
