Hoax Southampton bridge jump caller arrested
A hoax caller has been arrested after emergency services were scrambled to reports a man had jumped from a Southampton city centre bridge.
Solent Coastguard, Hampshire Police, Hamble Independent Lifeboat and an Associated British Ports launch were called to the Northam Bridge.
Water and shore-side searches both took place and marinas were scoured during the incident on Friday evening.
Police later traced the caller's telephone and arrested a man nearby.
During the search for the man, a "powerful laser beam light" was shone into the coastguard rescue helicopter, a spokesman for Solent Coastguard said.
The crew obtained video footage and police were investigating, he added.
