Conservatives to run Winchester City Council

The Conservative Party has taken control of Winchester City Council as a minority administration after the mayor had the casting vote.

The Tories and Liberal Democrats both tried to win support from two independent councillors and one Labour councillor after winning 27 seats each in the local elections.

At a council meeting on Wednesday night, all three abstained from voting.

As a result the Conservative city mayor had the casting vote.

Conservative councillor George Beckett has been announced as city council leader.
