Southampton park sex attack woman also robbed

A woman who was sexually assaulted in a Southampton park was also robbed, police have said.

The 21-year-old victim was walking through Green Park, Millbrook early on Saturday morning when she was attacked.

She was pushed to the ground from behind by a man who assaulted her and stole her mobile phone and purse.

Police said the attack was not linked to others but they are investigating "rumours" about "a strange man hanging around the local area".

They are trying to trace a large black and grey purse and a Nokia mobile phone the attacker stole from the victim.

The attacker wore a dark coloured kagool-type jacket with the hood up and the drawstring pulled tightly around his face. He is described as taller than 5ft 8in and of medium build.

'Facebook rumour'

Det Insp Dave Morgan said: "This is nasty attack on a lone woman who was walking home across a park.

"We are completing various enquiries and have more than 15 officers currently working on the case.

"These enquiries include visiting local residents and reviewing CCTV which we have obtained in the vicinity. We are also conducting high visibility patrols in the area."

"I would like to thank the public for the information that we have had so far.

"One important thing we have become aware of is that people have told us about a rumour circulating on Facebook about a strange man hanging around the local area.

"This may well have nothing to do with this investigation, but equally it could be vital information and I need to know more."

"I would like to stress that this attack is not linked to any other offences that I am aware of."
