Masked robbers take £20,000 from Southampton restaurant

A restaurant worker was threatened with a knife during a raid in which four masked robbers stole £20,000 in cash.

The 28-year-old assistant manager was kicked and punched by the gang at the Banana Wharf restaurant in Ocean Village, Southampton.

Fearing for his life he opened the safe after one of the robbers threatened him with a knife late on Monday, Hampshire Police said.

The balaclava-clad men made off through the fire exit with £20,000 in cash.

It is thought the robbers drove off in a white five-door Land Rover or a Range Rover-style vehicle.

The fire exit of the restaurant opens on to a courtyard area which leads to Channel Way near Endeavour Court and Alcantara Crescent.

The money the robbers took was contained in four mesh wallets.

A police spokesman said the member of staff was left shocked and with minor injuries.
