Memorial service for Sapper Connor Ray

A memorial service has been held for a soldier from Hampshire who died after an explosion in Afghanistan.

Sapper Connor Ray, serving with 33 Engineer Regiment, was fatally wounded while hunting for explosives in April on the eve of his 21st birthday.

He was buried with full military honours at St Woolas Cathedral in Newport, Wales, last Friday.

Some of his family still live in Bishopstoke and requested the service to be held at St Marys Church.

The Reverend Richard Wise said: "Some of his family who still live in the area were keen to hold a service so people who couldn't travel to Newport could pay their respects."

Sapper Ray was taken to Camp Bastion Role 3 Hospital and later transferred to Birmingham, where he died on 18 April.

More than 500 people attended his funeral at St Woolas Cathedral in Newport.
