Isle of Wight wheelchair man killed in crash identified

A man in a wheelchair who was killed when he was struck by a 4x4 vehicle on the Isle of Wight has been identified by police as Andrew David O'Neill.

Mr O'Neill, 32, was travelling along an unlit section of Newport Road in Godshill when the crash occurred on Saturday night. He died at the scene.

The 27 year-old driver of the Vauxhall Frontera, from Rookley, was not hurt.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving before being bailed until 28 November.

Mr O'Neill, who was from Godshill, was formally identified by next-of-kin on Sunday.

A post-mortem examination is due to be held later this week.

Anyone with information on the crash, which occurred at about 22:40 BST, is asked to contact police.
