Southampton homes evacuated as shell found

Homes in part of Southampton were evacuated after a shell was unearthed.

About 50 properties in the Shirley area were affected following the discovery shortly before 13:00 BST.

A 160ft (50m) cordon was put in place around the rusty 22-inch (56cm) brass bottomed shell, which was about 2.5 inches (6.5cm) in diameter.

Bomb disposal experts from Portsmouth removed the device, at the junction of Nightingale Road and Dyer Road, by 15:30 BST and the cordon was lifted.
