New Forest asbestos waste site plan approved
Plans for a site to dispose of asbestos in the New Forest have been approved by Hampshire County Council.
Solent Environmental Services is creating a site to dispose of the harmful material at Hardley Industrial Estate, near Hythe.
Neither New Forest District Council nor the Environment Agency objected to the proposal.
But residents' objections included the site being "not a safe distance" from homes and the health of local people.
The council's regulatory committee unanimously approved the application at a meeting earlier.
It attached two conditions to approval; that the applicant ensures noise at the site is reduced, and makes sure the CCTV on site can pick up images at low light.
Other concerns raised by residents included "imposing" security lighting, "any leaked waste" being blown on to nearby properties and concern over safety procedures at the site.
Solent Environmental Services, which specialises in asbestos removal, said its existing waste transfer station on the site had operated "for a number of years with no issues raised by either the Environment Agency or Hampshire County Council".
The firm urged residents to get in touch directly if they had any concerns or questions.
