An 86-year-old woman has been rescued from a fire at a flat in Portsmouth.

Thirteen firefighters took an hour to extinguish the blaze at the ground floor flat on Highgate Road, which started at about 03:15 BST.

Hampshire Police also helped evacuate the woman, who was disabled and did not have smoke detectors fitted in the property.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said it was a "timely reminder" of the importance of having them installed.
