A murder inquiry has been launched following the death of a man found seriously injured in a city street after being attacked.

The 39-year-old was discovered at the junction of Union Road and Radcliffe Road, Southampton, shortly before midnight on Monday.

He was pronounced dead in hospital. His next of kin have been informed.

Officers remain in the area and Radcliffe Road is closed between Union Road and Mount Pleasant Road.

Hampshire police, which described the victim's injuries as "significant", has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

It is believed to be "a contained incident and a number of lines of enquiries are ongoing to detain a suspect", the force said.
