Herefordshire recycling scheme used by 99%

A new recycling scheme in Herefordshire is being actively used by 99% of residents, according to a survey.

Wheelie bins, which can be used for all recyclable items such as cardboard, bottles and tins, were introduced in the county in November 2009.

Less black bag rubbish has been produced by 89% of respondents and 80% felt the new recycling service was better than the previous one.

One thousand people were contacted, Herefordshire Council said.

Councillor John Jarvis, cabinet member for environment and strategic housing, said: "I am delighted that so many people have embraced recycling and it is important to them.

"I am also pleased with the huge reduction in black sack rubbish because this is significantly reducing the amount of household waste we send to landfill."
