People have been urged not to steal the salt bins in Herefordshire ahead of a predicted cold snap later this week.
Herefordshire Council said it knew of at least six bins that had been stolen in the county last week.
It said the bins had been installed at residents' request to help them grit the areas by their homes and there was now a wait for new deliveries.
The Met Office has predicted sub-zero temperatures from Thursday with the chance of heavy snow.
The council said the thefts were "deplorable".
Clive Hall, from the council, said: "It severely restricts the ability of law-abiding residents to treat areas in their vicinity, especially as more cold weather is being forecast."
