Child rapist from Malvern jailed for 15 years

A 44-year-old man from Worcestershire who raped a child aged seven and sexually assaulted a five-year-old has been jailed for 15 years.

Julian Bird, of Elgar Avenue, Malvern, was found guilty of six counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault.

Bird showed no remorse and maintained his innocence despite "overwhelming evidence", Judge Gareth Evans told Worcester Crown Court.

The offences took place during a 12-year period.

'Satisfactory result'

Bird was also sentenced to eight, nine, 10, 12 and 14 years in prison for five rapes, and two years in prison for the four indecent assaults. All of the sentences are to run concurrently with the 15-year rape sentence.

He will also be placed on the sex offenders register for life.

Det Con Michelle Cook, of West Mercia Police, said: "This is a very satisfactory result, which I hope provides some comfort to Bird's victims.

"I also hope this encourages any victims of sexual abuse to contact police and have faith that all will be done to investigate any complaints and bring any offenders to justice."
