Man jailed for theft from unmarked police car

A prolific thief has been jailed for breaking into an unmarked police car in Worcestershire and taking a laptop bag.

Matthew Yates, 28, broke into the police car in Redditch on Wednesday, the day he was due to start a community order for a previous vehicle crime.

The car was fitted with cameras and used as bait to catch serial offenders.

Yates, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to theft from a vehicle and was ordered by Redditch magistrates to serve 18 weeks in jail.

Insp Ian Joseph, of West Mercia Police, said: "Whilst the bait car was an unusual tactic, its use was justified by an alarming rise in vehicle crime offences recently in the town area."

Police said car owners were advised not to leave items on display and to remove any traces of sat nav equipment, such as ring marks on the windscreen.
