Students warned in West Mercia Police safety appeal

Students in the West Mercia Police force area are being urged to think about their personal safety and home security as part of a new campaign.

Around 1,100 students aged between 16 and 25 were victims of crime in the force area last year, a spokesman said.

Police advise students not to show off valuables like mobile phones and iPods to reduce the risk of being targeted by thieves.

They are also asking them to think about the amount of alcohol they drink.

There are about 46,000 students across Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Worcestershire.

"Being a student is likely to be one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences you will have - don't let it be spoiled by crime," the spokesman said.

Police and community support officers will be visiting further education and sixth form colleges throughout September and October to hand out leaflets and give further advice.
