Eckington house fire kills woman and leaves man injured

A woman has died after a house fire in Eckington, near Pershore.

Paramedics found the woman in cardiac arrest at the house in Jarvis Street at about 19:30 GMT on Friday. She was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said despite the efforts of the emergency services, she later died as a result of her injuries.

A man who was found unconscious after breathing in smoke is critically ill in hospital.

The elderly woman who died has not been named but her next of kin have been informed.

The fire service said the blaze started in the kitchen and produced large amounts of smoke which spread throughout the house making search and rescue operations difficult.

A joint police and fire service investigation is under way to determine the exact cause of the fire.
