Man arrested over guest house fire in Worcester

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after a fire at a guest house.

The fire broke out in a first floor bedroom at City Guest House in Barbourne Road, Worcester, just before 23:30 GMT on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old man, who is being questioned by officers, was arrested on the same night, police said.

Mike Cunningham of the fire service said the actions of staff stopped anyone from being seriously hurt.

"If the fire procedures hadn't been so good there is no doubt the fire would have spread throughout the property, which would have put lives at risk," he said.

The fire was contained in the bedroom although heavy smoke filled the guest house, the service said.

The building and two neighbouring guest houses were evacuated and several residents were moved to alternative accommodation because of the incident.
