West Mercia Police was called by the ambulance service to Teme Road in the Tolladine area on Wednesday.
Adrian Locke, 39, of Wych Road, Droitwich, was found outside number 42a on the same road and confirmed dead at the scene a short time later.
A man in his 20s was arrested in Birmingham and is being questioned at Worcester Police Station.
A post-mortem examination found Mr Locke died of a stab wound to the torso.
A knife has been recovered from the property and further searches are being conducted, police said.
Officers have appealed for information.
Ch Insp Paul Kinsella said: "This is a fast moving investigation and although we have a man in custody, we are looking into whether more than one person was involved in the attack on Mr Locke.
"We are particularly interested in his whereabouts between 5pm and 7:20pm [on Wednesday] and we need to trace anyone who was at the scene when he was found, particularly before the emergency services arrived.
"We are especially keen to hear from anyone who saw someone or some people make off from the scene, whether that was on foot, by bike or in a vehicle."
