Former club is to be demolished in Scunthorpe

A former nightclub in North Lincolnshire is to be demolished to make way for event space.

Work will begin to demolish Club 2000 in Scunthorpe on Monday. It is expected to take four weeks.

North Lincolnshire Council bought the empty building in Church Square in 2007 with funding from Yorkshire Forward.

The council's first planned event for the new space is the Christmas lights switch on, which takes place on 18 November.

The council said the building would be demolished from the inside and as much material as possible would be recycled.

Once the building comes down, it is proposed that the area will be block paved to match the rest of the square and a new electric supply will be installed to enable large events to be held.

Councillor Mark Kirk, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said the demolition of the club would "help pave the way for further investment".
