A man has been jailed for the rape of a 16-year-old girl in East Yorkshire more than 30 years ago.

Jamie Smith, 52, of Sun Street, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, attacked the girl as she walked along Hornsea Burton Road in Hornsea in 1979.

A large police inquiry was started at the time but he was only arrested in July after new forensic developments led to him being identified.

He appeared at Hull Crown Court and was jailed for five-and-a-half years.

Police said Smith's DNA was matched to the crime after he was arrested for the cultivation of cannabis.

Det Supt Dena Fleming said: "In this case the victim went through a traumatic and terrifying ordeal but showed extreme bravery throughout."
