A man is seriously ill in hospital after he was assaulted outside a Hull pub in the early hours of New Year's Day, police have said.
The 40-year-old man was punched and fell to the ground after a disturbance broke out outside The George bar on Walton Street at about 0230 GMT.
Police said the man appeared to have been a bystander and not involved in the incident.
He suffered a head injury and was in intensive care in Hull Royal Infirmary.
Humberside Police said the man's family were at his bedside.
The scene has been cordoned off and detectives are examining CCTV footage of the area.
Police said they wanted to speak to anyone who was in The George pub in the early hours of Saturday, or anyone who was outside and saw what happened.
Det Ch Insp John Harding said: "It is vital that we speak to everyone who was in the area and saw what happened.
"We believe there may have been an altercation inside the pub earlier in the evening and I would like to speak to anyone who was there and witnessed what happened."
