A man has been jailed for raping a 69-year-old woman more than 25 years ago after new forensic evidence was found.

Kevin Moloney, 44, of Elloughton Road, Brough, admitted raping the woman in her Cottingham home in 1985. She died nine years ago.

The case was re-opened by police who used new techniques to match crime scene DNA with Moloney's, which was on record following an unrelated arrest.

He was sentenced to four years in prison at Hull Crown Court.

Police said a large-scale investigation at the time had failed to find the offender.

'Premeditated attack'

Moloney stayed in the area, got married and had two children.

His DNA was taken when he was arrested for cultivation of cannabis. It was matched following a "cold case" review and he was arrested in July 2010.

Det Supt Dena Fleming said: "This incident was a premeditated attack.

"Sadly the victim died nine years ago and will unfortunately never know that the person responsible for attacking her has been arrested and sentenced.

"That is a tragedy but her family will hopefully take some comfort from the fact that justice has finally been done."
