Lincolnshire drain covers theft prompts safety fears

Dozens of drain covers have been stolen from towns across north-east Lincolnshire by thieves cashing in on the value of scrap iron, police said.

About 42 cast iron covers have been taken in Grimsby, Clee, Habrough and other areas.

The resulting holes in the road pose a significant risk to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Humberside Police said the covers were being stolen "with little thought for the potential hazard".

Police are asking the public to be vigilant and look out for areas where drain covers are missing.

They are also reminding scrap metal dealers to "report any suspicious approaches from people trying to offload such items, and challenge where they have come from".
