Woman seriously hurt in Bridlington sheltered housing fire

A woman has been seriously injured and nine people had to be rescued after a fire broke out at a sheltered housing complex in East Yorkshire.

Emergency services were called to Chantry Court, Lawson Road, Bridlington, at about 05:24 GMT.

The 33 remaining residents were evacuated from the premises. Four people were taken to hospital suffering from the effect of breathing in smoke.

Humberside Fire and Rescue service said the cause of the fire was not known.

The flat where the blaze was believed to have started was badly damaged. Rooms nearby suffered minor smoke damage.

An investigation into what caused the fire is under way.
