Hull's Orchard Park residents watch tower block demolition

A crowd has watched the demolition of a block of flats on a Hull estate.

Bridgeman House was one of five tower blocks on the Orchard Park estate which will be destroyed by 2015.

They are being demolished to make way for a £15m housing scheme which will include 115 homes and the refurbishment of 100 flats from other blocks.

Some residents of a neighbouring block watched the demolition from the roof of their building. An exclusion zone was put in place for safety reasons.

Hall Road was closed between the junction of Orchard Park Road and Thorpepark Road from 08:00 BST.

Hull City Council's cabinet voted on 25 June to develop the 215 homes, but a final decision was made by council leader Steve Brady two weeks ago after detailed costs of the scheme had been put forward.

Liberal Democrat councillors had opposed the scheme, saying that it was "not value for money".
