Withernsea homes evacuated after gas leak

About 20 properties have been evacuated in an East Yorkshire town after a gas mains was damaged during road works.

A 39-tonne road surface removal machine was stuck on a section of gas pipe on Queen Street in Withernsea, Northern Gas Networks said.

The company said its engineers had turned off the gas supply and were waiting for the machine to be lifted by a crane before repair work could start.

The road is closed between Seaside Road and Holmpton Road.

A spokesperson from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said properties within a 100m radius of the incident were evacuated as a "precautionary measure".
