Power has been restored to more than 1,000 properties in Hull left without electricity because of an underground cable fault.

Northern Powergrid said 1,331 properties lost power at 10:14 BST in parts of east Hull.

Aquarium The Deep, a major tourist attraction, was forced to close for the day.

The power firm apologised to customers and confirmed the fault had been repaired.

Other businesses affected include the Goldcrest pub, in Victoria Dock, where the power cut affected trade.

'Money lost'

Manager James Knowles said he had to serve bottled drinks as the beer pumps stopped working and also had to cancel bookings for meals.

He said: "I've lost a booking this evening that was for for 10 people, so that's a £100 plus booking. So it's a lot of money lost."

In a statement Northern Powergrid said: "We apologise to all our customers affected by today's power cut which was caused by a fault on an underground cable.

"Our engineers were immediately dispatched to locate the fault which has now been repaired.

"As a precaution, we sent emergency generators to Hull to be available to supply power to essential services or businesses, but they were not needed."
