Firefighters have spent the day tackling a blaze at an electricity substation near Cottingham in East Yorkshire.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said crews from six fire engines dealt with the fire, which was in an electrical transformer.

Residents were told to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.

National Grid, which owns the facility, said there were no power cuts.

The fire broke out at about 14:00 BST. A large plume of black smoke was visible for miles around.

Steve Somers, who lives nearby, said he heard an explosion and saw thick black smoke fill the sky.

"At first I thought it might be thunder," he said. "I soon realised it must be something more serious like an explosion.

"I called the emergency services straight away."
